If you are reading this, the chances are you are thinking of dying your hair blonde. If that’s the case, then go for it! Just be sure to consider how much you are going to damage your hair, bleaching is not a pretty process and your hair will need lots of care and love during and after the bleaching. If you are sure that you want to go ahead, I am going to share how I did it and what steps I had to take. please note, I am not a professional, I am just sharing my personal experience in the hope that you may pick up some tips from me.

I started out as a dark brown colour, I knew that I would need to bleach and so I purchased a box of Garnier truly blonde creme pre lightener.

I mixed it up following the instructions and left it on for the required time. After washing it out, I was left with ORANGE hair, I’m talking carrot colour here. Which I was obviously not going to keep, I was prepared for this though and had already bought a box of Clairol nice and easy permanent dye in Natural Light Ash Blonde. As this is an ash colour, it contains blue tones which neutralise the orange tones in hair.

After this process my hair was a strawberry blonde colour, I quite liked it so decided to lay off the bleach for a while and keep the colour. After a month, I decided I’d had enough and wanted to carry on with the bleaching.

I bought another box of the same prelightener, this time I slathered my hair in pure coconut oil and let it soak in for a few hours before applying the bleach. You don’t need to wash the oil out, you just bleach straight over the top. The oil helps to reduce the damage caused by the bleach.

After bleaching this time, my hair was a lot brighter but definitely still orange and so I put on another lot of the nice and easy ash colour. And voila, my hair is now a gorgeous natural blonde colour. There are still a few warm tones in it but this doesn’t bother me. If you are bothered, I would recommend using a toner but for me, it’s fine.

My hair is feeling pretty healthy too after using the coconut oil and pretty much any repairing shampoos and conditioners I could find.

So that’s it, I hope you found this post helpful and you may even take away a few tips for yourself!
